Key West Travel Writing Workshop

Key West Travel Writing Workshop - How to be a Travel Writer 101
I think all good writing is travel writing," says author Russell Banks, and he goes on to mention Melville's Moby Dick. You may have thought of writing about your travels, too, even without a white whale in mind. If so, you might like to know about the Key West Travel Writing Workshop, which Bob Fisher has been hosting for over a decade down in the orchid-bedecked gardens in that Florida resort town. The course costs just $275.

Sponsored by the Heritage House Museum, the course concentrates on how to shape your travel story into something that editors would consider buying, and as a former editor of hundreds of books, Bob knows something about that, also bringing in past experience with magazines, newspapers and websites. For those not interested in selling, he emphasizes blogs or memoirs and tailoring those to today's' audiences.

Now a columnist and contributing editor at www.frommers.com, he is a former editor-in-chief at Fodor's, and contributor to many publications including Sports Illustrated, Life, Travel & Leisure and the Washington Post, to mention only a few. Professionally, his credits include being past president of the Society of American Travel Writers and a director of the British Guild of Travel Writers. He has lived and worked in Tokyo, London and India.

The course includes instruction on different types of travel writing, kinds of outlets, methods of research, determining the market, self-publishing, query letters and more. Classes are held in the museum's Robert Frost Cottage or in the adjacent, gorgeous garden. More details on the course can be found on the museum's website. The Heritage House is Key West's oldest house open to the public. The cost of tuition does not include lodging, meals or transportation. You can register at the Heritage House Museum, 410 Caroline Street, Key West FL 33040, tel. 305/296-3573, email heritagehouse@aol.com, website heritaghousemuseum.org. Or contact Bob directly at bobharu@aol.com.
