Taste of Greece - Taste of Greece at 1101 Truman Ave offers authentic Greek food cooked up and served by real Greek people. The
menu lists Greek favorites such as Spanikopita, Moussaka, stuffed grape leaves. and eggplant dishes. The
setting is pleasant, airy and clean. There are giant tubs of olives placed under the deli case, and the color
scheme is Greek light blue and white. Taste of Greece makes a pleasant first impression.
Their menu is a little surprising, although this being Key West it makes sense. If you want Moussaka, it
will cost you $25 a plate, There's no cheaper lunch menu so if you want something under $20 you will have to
get a hero sandwich or a wrap. The list of appetizers is extensive and lots of them cost under ten dollars.
However, if you plan to save money by filling up on appetizers, think again because they are very small amounts
of food. Just a taste of Greece. Prices seemed a little steep to us considering this is a casual deli with
paper napkins and no AC.
We ordered the Spanikopita appetizer and it was delicious. Two perfect little triangles of phyllo pastry and
scrumptious spinache and feta cheese stuffing. The tzatziki sauce was divine, very fresh and light tasting but
full of flavor and body. AWesome. We could have eaten about 5 or 6 each. Our hero sandwiches arrived
overflowing on dinner places, lots of food. French fries spilled over the edges in wonderful abundance, golden
and crispy delicious. The heros (we ordered veal hero and eggplant hero) were soldered onto foil sheets with
baked cheese so cutting them and eating them was tricky. I kept getting bits of foil in my food. There was
lots of sauce and cheese and wonderfully soft baked eggplant, but maybe there could have been more eggplant and
less sauce. The veal hero definitely did a good job of hiding the veal in the cheese and sauce, for a
disappointingly untasty sandwhich. I ended up eating mostly french fries because of the foil problem. My veal
hero friend gave up looking for his veal amid the cheese and sauce and ate lot of fries too. Needless to say,
we really got our taste of grease.
Service was pleasant but we had to get up and go to the deli counter to get more water. We were the only
customers there, too.
