Hemingway House


Hemingway House - Hemingway House is set elegantly behind a stately brick wall and a thick layer of old trees that sweep gracefully over the sidewalk and beckon the visitor inside for a closer look at the famous home within. This is where Ernest Hemingway lived in the 1930s and wrote some of his most famous works. Inside, you can take a tour that will inform you all about the home and its famous occupant. You'll learn about his succession of wives, his ultra expensive swimming pool, his cats, and his love of adventure, fishing and the bars of Key West. The guides at Hemingway House are thoroughly prepared, and will ge be glad to answer any questions you can come up with about Ernest Hemginway.

Once inside the front gate of the yard of Hemingway House, you'll be delighted to see that the gardens and old-growth foliage have been preserved, in addtion to the insides of the house. It's a lush, lovely garden and you are free to stroll around it and explore. Look for lazy cats lounging around everywhere you look, for the keepers of the Hemingway House love to keep up the image of Hemingway's love for cats. They are everywhere on the property, and the tourguides have names for each one. Just ask any question about the cats and you will get back a wealth of information about Hemingway and Hemingway's cats.

The interior of Hemingway House is lovingly preserved with period furniture, photographs, and Ernest Hemingway paraphanalia in every room. In the dining room, for example, witness and parade of wives in his live, memorialized over the buffet table, in black and white pictures. The tourguide will tell you the story of each wife, and this helps give insight into the man who took Key West by storm when he lived here.

Ernest Hemingway was a large character, and he lived large. He caught big fish, he smoked big cigars, and he was a big drinker. He liked to box and he had a permanent table at Sloppy Joe's Bar and Saloon. His character lives on in Key WEst today, kept alive by the dedicated and imaginative tourguides who bring him to life every day at his former residence, for visitors to one of Key West's most popular attrations.
