Shipwreck Museum - Key West's Shipwreck Historeum & Museum is where you want to be if you are at all interested in the wrecking or salvaging industry that make Key West the richest city in the country more than one-hundred years ago. Learn about the business from a tourguide who will show you some items from authentic shipwrecks. Learn about one famous shipwreck that contained tons of marble destined for the Customs House in New Orleans. See a mock salvaging warehouse setup and get a good sense of this all-important industry that's so much a part of Key West's past.
The best part is the 65-foot observation deck. Wreckers watched the reef for ailing ships from up there, and rang a loud bell when one was spotted. Today, visitors to the museum can get a super view of the city of Key West, Key West harbor, and Mallory Square from up there. Watch out for kids that love to ring that ear-piercing bell! |
