Trapped Sea Turtle in Hawks Channel

On the way home from a day of spearfishing on Sunday, we thought we saw a dead sea turtle floating in the channel.  We were in the channel in front of Key West, almost to the Harbor where the cruise ships park.  All that was visible was the sea turtle’s rear end, poking a few inches out of the water.  Everything else was submerged, and he was at a funny angle, almost 100% verticle.  We’ve seen dead sea turtles before, floating, and they float horizonatally on the surface.  This was different.

When we got closer, you could see that he was moving his flippers.  He was alive!  And there was something attached to him, long and thin, disappearing down into the depths of the channel.  He was stuck on the rope from a lobster trap!  Well it was Brian to the rescue, since we all had our wetsuits off already and he is somehow impervious to cold water.

Brian jumped in, swam up to the turtle, and cut him loose.  The turtle swam away and that was that.  It took less than one minute once Brian got up to the turtle, then he was free.  Hero for the day.

This is Brian. He Saved the Turtle.

This is Brian.
